Cover Letter Writing –
Don't underestimate it's importance!

Now that you have gotten the basics of designing your resume, we want to focus your attention onto a piece of document so often neglected by candidates – Cover letter.

What is a cover letter you may ask? Wouldn’t a resume cover all the relevant information?

First and foremost, a cover letter is not a job application; it is basically a short piece of letter that accompanies your resume, portfolio or any other documents that you send to a prospective employer. Just like an introduction of a book, so is a cover letter to a resume.

Key Objectives of a Cover Letter

  • Introduce yourself
  • Highlight key personal attributes that matches the job in application
  • Demonstrate your research and writing skills
  • Attract attention to get an interview

Important Notes

  • Tailor your cover letter to match closely the job position.
  • Try not to use a generic cover letter for all jobs.
  • Be systematic in the content:
    1. Purpose of letter
    2. Why you want this job
    3. Your work skills that are relevant to the job (trade qualifications, work experience, etc.)
    4. Your personal skills that are relevant to the job (communication skills, organizational skills, etc.)
    5. Closing – end on a positive note and avoid sounding ‘desperate’
  • Make sure that there are no spelling, grammatical, typing errors and such.
  • Keep it short and concise.
